Survey Number

A unique numeric identifier assigned to each land parcel by the Revenue Department during the original land survey.

What is a Survey Number?

A survey number is the unique identifier assigned to every land parcel in revenue records during the original land survey conducted by the government. It remains constant unless the land is formally subdivided. The format varies by state — in Tamil Nadu, survey numbers are typically numeric with optional subdivision indicators like 123/2A, where 123 is the parent survey number and 2A is a subdivision. Every revenue document — Patta, Chitta, EC, FMB — references this survey number.

Survey number in land acquisition workflows

The survey number is the primary key for all land records. During due diligence, every document must be cross-referenced using the survey number to confirm consistency — the Patta, Chitta, EC, and FMB should all reference the same survey number with the same extent. GPS coordinates from a site visit should map to the correct survey number boundaries. Any inconsistency in survey numbers across documents is a serious red flag that requires immediate investigation.

Sub-divisions and re-surveys

When land is subdivided — through sale of a portion, family partition, or development — new sub-survey numbers are created under the parent survey number. The Revenue Department records this subdivision in the A-Register and issues new Pattas for each sub-divided parcel. Periodic re-surveys by the government may reassign survey numbers entirely. Always verify the latest survey number with the Taluk office, especially for properties that have been subdivided multiple times.
